Jasmine/"Jazz" Tanner
Species: wolverine
Gender: butch -> trans man Personality: very rough around the edges but has a relatively good heart but would totally kick your ass if you hurt them or one of their friends Likes: grunge music and clothes, punk rock, gold, hair dye, flannel, red meat, hot pink Dislikes: their mom, homophobia, the wealthy |
Originally named "Jasmine" for the calming tea, Jazz found that that name didn't quite fit her at an early age. Since she was young, she's been tenacious, rowdy, and an all-around pain in the ass to most people around her. She's rude and crude, and she doesn't take shit from anyone. She doesn't let her friends take shit, either--or at least not if she has anything to say about it.
Deep down, she's afraid of a lot of things, and she uses her angsty exterior to pretend like she's not afraid. It usually works, though if she's pushed way past her limits, her walls will break, and she will have a good cry. Not before she makes those who've hurt her pay, though.
She's very much punk rock and likes to wear 90's grunge fashion. She keeps her head fur/hair dyed, and though sometimes she switches up the colors, she'll usually keep it violet or magenta. Her favorite color is secretly pink--a very hot pink--but she likes to say it's black, "like her soul."
She was raised in Carnivora on one of the mustelid islands off of the main canine continent. She moved to the main continent when she got kicked out by her mom for not accepting her as a lesbian. That's made her super aggressive against homophobes and super angsty when talking about her family. Her dad was always out of the picture, and since she isn't welcomed around her mother's side of the family, she's basically alone.
Alone save for her current partner, Reno. He's a bit of a mystery to her, as he keeps insisting he wants to "be a man", even though he was born female. She constantly misgenders him, and most of their fights are about how little Jazz respects his identity. She's a lesbian, and she can't see herself ever dating a man. But that's not all. Her mother's words had gotten to her--the transphobic rhetoric, at least. Now, she repeats it to her partner, claiming that Reno is just butch and is riding a "fad wave". Truthfully, she just doesn't want to let the one person who's stuck by her in her life go. She doesn't want to see him abandon her, and she doesn't want to give up her identity as a lesbian that she has held tightly onto since leaving her mother's.
Another bombshell that it takes her years to figure out is that she herself is a trans man. She doesn't want to even consider it at first because she dislikes most men. That's possibly because she never has known a good one and possibly because she's just not attracted to them in any way, shape, or form. She doesn't want to consider that the identity that she's held onto for so long--being a cis lesbian--is a lie and that her mother kicked her out for no good reason. Not that her mother would have let her stay had she known of her trans identity, and not that that's a good reason to kick someone out, regardless. She learns from Reno about being trans and how to accept him and others like him. Though they eventually break off their relationship--because of the prior tension and Jazz's sexual/romantic disinterest in men of any type--they remain friends. Their bond is made stronger by this revelation, though it is hard-won.
