Mahdi hatched in the presence of a wealthy lord and his servants after being stolen from the nest with his older sister, Fereshteh. Not long after Mahdi hatched, the lord who now "owned" them had their wings cut off so they couldn't fly away. Mahdi was first, and because she tried to protect him, Fereshteh received many scars besides those where her wings had been. Mahdi, the more submissive of the two, has almost no scarring, because he has been taught to obey the masters.
Both dragons were taught to fear the whip and the lord, as well as obey the chains placed on their necks. Neither dragon can create fire without special mineral deposits from the mountains where they were laid, and they were never taught the behavior so they don't know how to use it. Mahdi is gentler in approach and personality than his sister, and he enjoys a good scratch from Amal, who took care of them from after their capture till now. He helped his sister defend Amal as they escaped the lord's prison.
Now, Mahdi travels with the two towards the mountains, where Fereshteh leads them. Likely not to be accepted by other dragons but also definitely not accepted by humans, it may be the trio have no place to call home and nowhere to go.
